The meeting will focus on addressing key challenges in board-level risk governance and the Board – Chief Risk Officer Relationship. Board members and risk managers don’t always speak the same language. How do risk management leaders frame their valuable knowledge and data so that they can most effectively be used in board oversight and strategic planning – both of which are key fiduciary duties? Is risk data presented in a way that feels deterministic and overly certain? Are risk leaders consistent in their methods of risk identification for board use during decision-making? How are the intuitive recollections of past experiences by board members leading to an overemphasis on familiar risks while potentially critical ones are neglected? Do board members overvalue heat maps, and should risk managers stop using them? What about risk appetite statements, arrows that point up, down, or sideways, and other “standard” tools? This meeting will explore more sophisticated and integrated approaches to elevate risk communications between the board and the leaders in risk management that lead to a better and more effective relationship.
